Harris County Public Library offers Literacy, English as a Second Language and Citizenship classes. Our Literacy and English as a Second Language programs help adults with basic reading and writing and/or spoken English skills. Our Citizenship program helps people who are interested in becoming U.S. citizens. Our 26 branch locations provide a place where students and tutors from a variety of cultural and educational backgrounds can meet to share what they have learned. English as a Second Language English as a Second Language students and tutors meet either one-on-one, in a small group or as large group classes. As in the adult literacy program, meetings can take place during the day or in the evening at any one of our branch locations. It is not necessary for tutors to be able to speak another language. The library provides materials and training to enable tutors and students to practice reading, writing and speaking the types of words and phrases they are likely to need daily. Literacy The Literacy program is designed for adults who speak English fluently and read at a fifth-grade level or below. Students and tutors meet one-on-one to work in books provided by the library or on reading and writing skills students would like to apply in their own lives. This program is available at most branch locations. Citizenship The Citizenship classes, held in small groups of six or less, are offered at five of the 26 library branches. Tutors uses curriculum supplied by the library literacy program and work with students to also study the 100 questions which are given on the Naturalization Test. Questions about volunteering?
