Volunteer opportunities coming soon for the 2017-2018 school year

If you would like to volunteer for Read Houston Read, registration is now open, which begins with a background check. Even if you volunteered last school year, you will need to undergo a new background check.

By giving 30 minutes to one hour of your time, once a week throughout the school year, you will help a first grader be that much closer to reading and writing with fluency. As an in-person mentor, you will:

  • Share the magic of books by reading to a child
  • Engage in fun activities that directly relate to the reading
  • Listen to a child read as they share their own book with you
Here’s how to get started:
  1. Register for an account on Connect 4 Literacy
    1. Click here to Register
    2. On the final registration question, give consent to a background check performed by Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS).
  2. When you receive confirmation that your background has been approved, browse from the volunteer opportunities by searching “Read Houston Read” and pick a school. Then sign up for one day each week, or as many as possible, through the end of the year.
    1. Reminder: if for any reason you cannot attend a session during the year, simply contact the volunteer coordinator at that school and let them know. You may be able to reschedule for a different day that week, or skip to the next week.
  3. Once you are signed up to volunteer, you must complete Read Houston Read orientation which consists of four short training videos found here>>
  4. You are all set to share the magic of reading with your student(s). Have fun!
This is an opportunity to build an important relationship with a student that will leave a lasting impact on their self-esteem, their ability to learn and their ultimate success. By working with the same student(s) for an entire school year, you have the potential to change the direction of their lives, simply by sharing the gift of reading.

Note: You must have a successful background check on file in order to be a mentor. Once your background check is complete, you will eligible to sign up as a mentor.
