Volunteer opportunities from October to May each school year.

To volunteer for Read Houston Read, you begin with a background check. Even if you volunteered last school year, you will need to undergo a new background check.

By giving 30 minutes to one hour of your time, once a week throughout the school year, you will help a first grader be that much closer to reading and writing with fluency. As an in-person mentor, you will:
  • Share the magic of books by reading to a child
  • Engage in fun activities that directly relate to the reading
  • Listen to a child read as they share their own book with you
To learn more about or volunteering for a Houston Independent School District campus, supporting programs like Read Houston Read and Real Men Read please be sure to complete your Volunteers In Public Schools (VIPS) application today.  Volunteers serving schools within the Houston Independent School are required to get a District issued background check every year.  Your VIPS application must be completed and approved before signing up for any Houston Indpendent School District school volunteer opportunities.  Click here to complete your VIPS application.

Note: You must use the same email address for VIPS and Connect4Literacy.org for your background check to be recorded on both platforms.

This is an opportunity to build an important relationship with a student that will leave a lasting impact on their self-esteem, their ability to learn and their ultimate success. By working with the same student(s) for an entire school year, you have the potential to change the direction of their lives, simply by sharing the gift of reading.

Not sure yet if you want to sign up? Watch the video below and hear about the experience firsthand from a Read Houston Read volunteer.
Note: You must have a successful background check on file in order to be a mentor. Once your background check is complete, you will eligible to sign up as a mentor.
