Books Between Kids

Mission

Our mission is to build home libraries for children in need, one summer at a time

Core Literacy Programs

Founded in 2012, Books Between Kids collects gently-used children's books to build home libraries for children in need. Books are distributed before the summer break at elementary and early childhood campuses across Houston ISD during our free book fairs, called "Book Celebrations." During these Book Celebrations, each child is able to browse a wide variety of books and select 6 books to take home and cherish forever. Each year, Books Between Kids distributes hundreds of thousands of books to tens of thousands of at-risk Houston children, many of whom become book owners for the very first time.

Volunteer Testimonials

Share a quote from one of your volunteers or service recipients here. "Thank you for all the books you gave us. We sure love them. You are a book angel! We just love them so much that sometimes we even bring them to recess!" -Christian, HISD student-

"Whenever we told the students they were theirs to own and keep forever so many students would cheer, get tears in their eyes or even say 'Are you serious?' These kids look forward to [the Book Celebration] every year and are so excited to have books to call their very own to read at home!" -Haley, HISD teacher-

"I loved helping sort all those books! That is probably the most books I have ever seen...I can't imagine how happy those kids will be to get new books! It was really fun to help kids get to read." -Caroline, 4th Grade Student & Books Between Kids Volunteer-
