Literacy Resources

Thank you for taking the first step in volunteering through Connect4Literacy.org. Check out the videos below for tips and best practices for volunteering with both youth and adults.  Handouts supporting each topic can be found at the bottom and to the left of this page.

Decoding English: In order to decode the English language, you have to know two things:  the letters and the sounds.  The English language is based on the alphabetic principle – when written symbols called graphemes match sounds in the spoken words that are called phonemes.

Determining Learner Profiles: Alarmingly, ninety-three million adults in the U.S. are functionally illiterate and thirty million adults struggle with the most basic and concrete literacy skills.  These adults may have dropped out of school, have undiagnosed or untreated learning disabilities, or may be speakers of languages other than English. Grab some insight on helping an adult learn to read.

Differentiating Instruction to Meet Learner Needs: Address the diversity of learners' needs, interests, abilities, and experiences when planning and delivering instruction.

Neuhaus Academy for Adult Learners: Neuhaus Academy is a free, online resource for adolescents and adults who want to improve their ability to read and for individuals who want to increase their vocabulary.
