Decoding English: In order to decode the English language, you have to know two things: the letters and the sounds. The English language is based on the alphabetic principle – when written symbols called graphemes match sounds in the spoken words that are called phonemes.
Determining Learner Profiles: Alarmingly, ninety-three million adults in the U.S. are functionally illiterate and thirty million adults struggle with the most basic and concrete literacy skills. These adults may have dropped out of school, have undiagnosed or untreated learning disabilities, or may be speakers of languages other than English.
