My Home Library Build Event - Franklin Elementary
My Home Library is an initiative of the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation aimed at providing more children of low income families an opportunity to have the essential tools that are necessary for reading success — books. The Foundation is excited to partner with 3 elementary schools located in Houston’s East End (Franklin, Gallegos and Tijerina), thanks to funding provided through Hess Corporation’s LEAP (Learn.Engage.Advance.Persevere) 2.0 program. To empower disadvantaged children to become strong readers through book ownership, the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation will host My Home Library Build Events.
Here is how a My Home Library Build Event works:
1. The Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation orders a diverse collection of brand new, popular children’s books from our book partners.
2. Volunteers and staff set up a My Home Library Build Event by displaying the books in a designated area within a partner school or licensed childcare center.
3. All children in the school or center are given an opportunity to participate in the My Home Library Build Event, during which they choose six books with help from volunteers and staff.
4. Children are given book marks, bags and their six books at no cost to them thanks to our sponsors and donors.
5. Children leave wearing big smiles and carrying the tools they need to become strong readers.
Volunteers participating on October 11th will assist with setup for Franklin Elementary School’s My Home Library Build Event. Volunteer roles consist of unboxing and displaying the books in a designated area. October 12th is the school’s My Home Library Build Event. Volunteer roles will include encouraging and guiding students through book selection, locating book titles, pre-bundling and packaging Pre-K books, and assisting with checkout.
