Read Houston Read

Volunteer opportunities from October through May each school year.

If you would like to volunteer for Read Houston Read, registration is now open, which begins with a background check. Even if you volunteered last school year, you will need to undergo a new background check.

Literacy by 3 is the Houston Independent School District’s (HISD) movement to end the literacy crisis in Houston. It’s mission – to have every child reading and writing with fluency by the end of third grade.

This goal cannot be achieved solely by teachers in classrooms. We need your help. By giving a half-hour to an hour of your time each week throughout the school year, you will help a first grader be that much closer to reading and writing with fluency. Through the Read Houston Read program, whether you choose to mentor in-person or mentor online, you will:
  • Share the magic of books by reading to a child.
  • Engage in fun activities that directly relate to the reading.
  • Listen to a child read as they share their own book with you.
The Read Houston Read program is currently in 50 schools across the district, serving more than 300 first grade classes where children are in desperate need of an adult to read to them, listen to them and reinforce the progress started in the classroom.

This is an opportunity to build an important relationship with a student that will leave a lasting impact on their self-esteem, their ability to learn and their ultimate success. By working with the same student(s) for an entire school year, you have the potential to change the direction of their lives, simply by sharing the gift of reading.

To learn more about or volunteering for a Houston Independent School District campus, supporting programs like Read Houston Read and Real Men Read please be sure to complete your Volunteers In Public Schools (VIPS) application today.  Volunteers serving schools within the Houston Independent School are required to get a District issued background check every year.  Your VIPS application must be completed and approved before signing up for any Houston Indpendent School District school volunteer opportunities.  Click here to complete your VIPS application.

Note: You must use the same email address for VIPS and Connect4Literacy.org for your background check to be recorded on both platforms.

And don’t stop there! If you have a family member, friend, neighbor or colleague who may be interested, share this flyer and encourage them to sign up as well.

Note: You must have a successful background check on file in order to be a mentor. Once your background check is complete, you will eligible to sign up as a mentor.
